Business a. Subcommittee reports |
Shelley Francis reviewed the previous meeting’s minutes. Highlights included the identification of final conference sessions and committee members would begin contacting potential donors for updated contact and mailing information. Barbara Chavious reported that the poverty simulation contact needs at least 25 people to do the workshop and no more than 125 people. The simulation allows participants to experience dealing with various social services and agencies such as pawnshops etc. She can tailor the program to meet our needs specific to minority health, social determinants of health. Kacey Hanson, Publicity committee chair, reported that she is working closely with Bev Holt on promo cards for the conference. We are working to have the promo cards ready for APHA. Committee reviewed cards and made minor suggestions. Kacey hopes to hold a subcommittee meeting next week. Volunteers are needed to assist with publicity at APHA and to assist with the booth. Vic Schoenbach suggested using e-marketing to make contacts with HBCU’s. One of the local radio stations would like to collaborate with us on conference publicity for a fee. Chandra Ford, Speakers committee chair, was absent but the following topics are still seeking speaker contacts: incarceration, men’s health, education, and occupational health. Carol Parks Bani agreed to serve as a moderator/facilitator for a panel on Cultural views of health. The Budget & Fundraising Committee chair, Maceo Thomas, reported that this committee is seeking to expand and update the potential donor contact lists. The solicitation letter is finished. A draft will be submitted to M. Thomas for review. The committee plans to send out letters before Fall Break (Oct. 18). Also a solicitation letter is being drafted to send to parents and faculty of SPH students. Jabar Akbar reported that the Minority Student Caucus is holding a fundraiser/party at Players on November 30, 2001, with some of the proceeds earmarked to go to the Minority Health Conference. Stay tuned for further information. Vic Schoenbach will email business card template to the list so that students can make their own business cards for APHA. Maceo Thomas suggested acquiring contact information from speakers at APHA who would make a positive contribution to the conference. Maggie Hicken offered to share a list of speakers re: Minority Health with the committee. Barbara Chavious suggested passing out solicitation letters at APHA. Next meeting will be on October 31, 2001 due to APHA.
